The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane 30ml

I bought this product in May and it's been 3 months and this has completely transformed my skin.It got rid of my closed comedones and faded my acne marks.I have tried many products but none have worked this well in such a short period of time.I would highly recommend this as it useful in skin cell turnover.

This is the real deal. And it's potent for sure! I was skeptical going up from 0.2% to 0.5%. But the 1% for me is legit. In fact, I have to slow down a bit because I do feel it has made my skin slightly more sensitive. Low and slow is the way. My plan is to stay on 1% for a few months before trying the retinal serum.

I have been using the Ordinary's retinol serums for many years starting out with 0.2% and now at 1% in squaline. At 61 years old I am happy to have this high quality affordable serum in my skin regime, it has made a big difference in my skins aging process. I look back at photographs from 20 years ago (I already had quite deep creases between my brows), and I can see that they are better at 61 than they were at 41 which is amazing. I trust the Ordinary as a brand, they have only necessary ingredients in their formulas not lots of colour, perfume and fillers.They also have explanations and uses for each product on each of the product pages.

Love this retinol from the first night I used it my skin felt really hydrated a softer more even texture. It didn’t irritate my skin if I peel it off a little bit but nothing but with a good moisturizer and sunscreen to continue taking care of my skin. My skin is oily acne tendency! I’ve been using this product for the last 2 years and have definitely seen an improvement in my skin tone. In fairness, this is probably due to a combination of factors but the Retinol has definitely played a major role. I use it 2-3 times a week (at night time). It feels luxuriant on application, I love the texture. My 58 year old skin now looks clearer than ever before, I’m sure my fine lines are less visible and I’ve ditched my foundation completely in favour of tinted moisturiser - preferably with SPF50 of course!

This serum definitely helped improve the texture of my skin (using it intermittently with a chemical exfoliator) and reduce the amount of clogged pores i have, HOWEVER, it is a sensory NIGHTMARE. I will no longer be repurchasing cause I cannot for the life of me stand the feeling of it, it feels like I literally poured cooking oil all over my face.

I am very happy with the product, never had any problems with irritation as I followed the recommended procedure and I allowed my skin to build up to it. The issue I do have however is with the size. 30ml for a product with a 3-month shelf-life is very wasteful in my opinion. It would be far more better if it came in 15ml and we could just buy two or more. The 3 months are over and I'm not even halfway through the bottle, because the product really lasts (I use 4 drops every night and it's enough for my whole face). So, again, very wasteful to just dump half a bottle of retinol every 3 months.\r\n\r\nAlso, it would be very helpful if shelf-life was part of every product description. If I knew, I would have maybe preferred to buy one of the retinoids with a 6-months self-life. Please consider adding it.

I have been using Retinol for some time now and am always careful with the concentration, it’s frequency of usage and use sunscreen daily. \r\nWithin 2 applications of the Ordinary’s Retinol some 4 days apart unfortunately over night it has caused my skin to develope wrinkles and visible lines that were NOT there before, especially around apples of cheeks. I have good skin for my age. I am so shocked and very disappointed with this product and my GP suggested moisturising several times a day for a week, if there’s no improvement he will start me on a course of steroids.\r\nI feel compelled to write of my experience in using this retinol product.

I bought this awhile ago. I use retinol for its acne fighting properties and i have found this serum works great and is affordable. i like to check my skincare products for porecloggers and when i saw the ingredients i was devastated to see Butylated Hydroxy Toluene, and now i’m going to stop using it bc of the known harmful affects of BHT. i really like the ordinary and it’s products. do better please! find a more natural/harmless preservative!

I've been using this for about a month, because I have been using retinol for a long time I was happy to start applying it nightly from the off. I've been disappointed with previous retinol formulas that have burned my skin and not faded the hyperpigmentation which is what I am after, but this is really starting to fade a large coin sized patch on my cheek that has been there for 20 years. It has halved in size and I am so pleased. I have noticed that my lines and wrinkles are starting to reduce too.\r\n\r\nI know that the squalane puts a lot of people off, and it did feel greasy to me when I first started using it but I have noticed that with use, my skin has got used to it and I let the serum soak in for about 20 minutes before applying my moisturiser. My skin feels lovely and smooth. I can't see me stopping using this any time soon.

I have been using this for 6 months and seen no improvements to the pigmentation, texture (acne scarring), wrinkles, elasticity, or fine lines on my skin. If anything, they've only become more pronounced (in the 6 months, my crow's feet multipled). I did not experience any of the peeling or dryness that are supposed to be a side effect of this product. I also find it very oily and it does not absorb easily into my skin. As a result, I need to massage it for a very long time and the product later wipes off onto my clothing or pillowcase. Maybe that's why it's not doing anything, because it doesn't even stay on my face?? Or it just doesn't work. I just started using this but my initial reaction is not at all positive. The serum is so oily and heavy! I feel like my face can't breathe with just a few drops of it on, the same way I feel with most sunscreens (I'm REALLY picky about sunscreen for my face for that reason). I've read enough about it to expect an initial break out/ purge but when it happens I'll have no idea if it's from the oil or the retinol. Plus, the instructions online say to keep it refrigerated, but it wasn't sealed or anything when it arrived, so how do I know it hasn't gone bad in the warehouse or in transit? \n\nDespite all of that, I'm really hoping to be able to update this review in a few months with positive results. Fingers crossed.

It’s offered by the ordinary. I have been using this product for years and have easily gone through more than 5 bottles of the 1% retinol. Since my skin has become well-acclimated to it, I don't experience any sensitivity, but I recommend starting with a lower concentration if you're new to retinol. The product has an incredibly silky texture that feels luxurious to apply, and I love slathering it on my face each night—I can't imagine my skincare routine without it. Its emollient, oily consistency is ideal for my dry climate, effectively counteracting any potential drying effects of retinol. Even though it doesn't dry out my skin, the extra moisture it provides keeps my skin feeling hydrated and supple. The difference it makes in my skin's texture and appearance is remarkable, and I truly believe it's an essential part of my nightly regimen.

My daughter got this for me to try and I love it. My skin hasn’t looked this good for 10 years. I have some dark spots that have faded so much that I can barely see them now and my skin is smoother and brighter. Initially I was just using the product on the right side of my face because I wanted to do a little experiment to see if I could see any visible difference from using the product and within 5-6 days I started to see a difference and I was worried that the right side of my face was going to look so much better that I would look “off” or weird lol so I had to start using it on my whole face. I do have a little bit of flakiness from dryness on my cheeks - but that’s kinda on me because I don’t moisturize every day. Also , I’m so grateful that there’s no added/ unnecessary fragrance ( or if there is I don’t notice it) in the product. Thank you for this product !

My first retinol from TO was 0,5%, and overall it was a nice product, it helped me with texture and a few sun damaged spots on my face, it did nothing to my acne scars. So I decided to go up and bought 1%, and what a game changer. First three weeks were a nightmare, my skin dried up and started to peel, but right now it smoothed out, my texture and closed comedones went away, red spots from acne started fading away, my skin overall is smooth and nice to touch. I see how it works with pimples, I still get a few before period, but it's not as much as I had before, and they literally gone overnight! Amazing! I bought another bottle? because I want to continue this journey! And squalane is amazing oil, it sinks into the skin really fast and makes it soft, I love it. Very afraid to try this high potency product, also said high irritation, I sprayed a hydrosol or rose water over each of my eyes then did one drop of this under each eye, and gently massaged it in. I have very sensitive skin, and I had zero irritation, but the reverse occured, it hydrated me and made my skin supple! Definitely gives the glow. I also did 5% granactive retinol squalene. 5 drops in palm, sprayed hydrosol over, and massaged in, super rapid absorption. No irritation and amazing glow! The trick with the ordinarys oil based products is to apply them on damp skin, or with a water based spray. Then it absorbs right away instead of sitting on the top layer of skin, and feeling not so pleasant. ;) hope my tips help ;) thank you Ordinary! Very satisfied with the amazing selection

Very excited to try this long term!I’ve been using the 0.5 % one and I’ve decided to try the 1%! I’ve noticed a craaaaazy reduction of fine lines on my forehead (I’m actually shocked how quickly they disappeared after starting my first bottle ever last month...uh amazing!!?) why is this stuff SO CHEAP?!? It has genuinely been working well for me. Question for the company, as I have messaged the Instagram but got no response, which is understandable. Can I use Matrixyl 10% + HA along with the 1% retinol with Squalane??? Warning: Start with a less potent form of retinol if you've never used it before. Your skin will start peeling, become red, irritated and raw within a few days. And I don't even have sensitive skin. I understand how retinol works so I started with a milder form (Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion). When I finished the bottle, I decided to jump to the strongest Retinol 1% in Squalane. What I should have done is moved on to the Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane and used every other day along with moisturizer. Even though my skin is super irritated and currently seem to have more wrinkles under my eyes, I know that with time this highly potent pure formula will do its job. The Ordinary clearly states that their 1% retinoid is highly irritated so again, take your time to build up to this instead of jumping into it as I did.

I am very happy with the Retinol 1% in Squalane and its simple formula. Retinols in an oil base such as this are quite rare and I much prefer it to creams, as you only need to apply a few drops and it spreads well. I don't mind the oily film it leaves since I use it at night anyway. I use it every other night after the Ethylated Ascorbic Acid, alternating with the Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion, as my skin can handle it and I do not mind the little bit of irritation. The dryness and flaking can be a pain sometimes but this is easily remedied by applying lots of moisturizer on top. It made such a huge difference to my skin, leaving it smooth and improved in texture and tone. I know with consistent use the results will be much better. Retinols sold by other brands can definitely be expensive, and I'm very pleased about the outstanding quality of this product for the price!
